Roughriders expected to name Chris Jones head coach and general manager

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders have found the right man for both jobs. TSN first reported Sunday night that, just one week after winning a Grey Cup with the rival Edmonton Eskimos, that Chris Jones has been hired as the head coach and general manger of the Green & White.

The defensive guru has spent over a decade north of the border winning Grey Cups as with Montreal in 2002 (defensive line coach), with Calgary in 2008 (defensive coordinator), with Toronto in 2012 (defensive coordinator) and with Edmonton in 2015 (head coach).

Jones took over the head coaching job in Edmonton in 2014 and in just two years took a 4-14 team to the top of the CFL. The the 48-year-old Tennessean has been a Coach of the Year finalist both seasons in Edmonton.

Jones is reported to assume the General Manager role with the Riders, receiving the title over the team’s interim GM Jeremy O’Day who assumed his role in late August when Brendan Taman was relieved of his duties. Jones has previous front office experience serving as an assistant GM in Toronto and an assistant director of player personnel in Calgary.

This is not the first time the Eskimos and Riders have hired a coach away from each other.  In 2009 Edmonton hired long time Saskatchewan defensive coordinator Richie Hall as their head coach.

The has been no official announcement by the Saskatchewan Roughriders football club but a press conference has been called for Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
